Sandusky convicted

Jerry Sandusky was convicted Friday of sexually assaulting 10 boys over a span of 15 years. A jury found him guilty on 45 of 48 counts and the charges carry a minimum of 60 years in prison.

Judge John Cleland revoked Sandusky’s bail and ordered him to be taken to county jail to await sentencing in about three months.

Sandusky’s scandal last fall led to the downfall of Penn State, one of the most storied programs in college football, and the subsequent death of legendary coach Joe Paterno.

Heat win second title

The Miami Heat pulled off the unthinkable in beating the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games during the NBA Finals to capture the franchise’s second title.

The Heat wrapped up the series at home with a 121-106 rout. LeBron James won his first NBA title since he was drafted into the league nine years ago, silencing his critics, at least for now.

James is one of my least favorite athletes, and whether he is a changed man as he claims, I can’t be sure. But I will say that he seemed like he played with a different attitude this postseason. Before, an NBA championship appeared to him as something he deserved simply because he has all the talent, whereas this year he played like he wanted to earn it.

Cats dethrone Gamecocks

The Arizona Wildcats won their fourth College World Series on Monday as they defeated two-time defending champion South Carolina, 4-1.

Arizona won its first national championship since 1986. Head coach Andy Lopez took over the program during hard times 11 years ago.

The hat trick was not to be for South Carolina, which would have been the first team since Southern California in the 1970s to win three consecutive national championships.

Venus Williams ousted in first round at Wimbledon

Is it the end of an era for the Williams sisters? Five-time Wimbledon champion Venus Williams was knocked out of the tournament in the first round Monday by 79th-ranked Elena Vesnina of Russia.

Williams also made an early exit at the French Open, losing in the second round.

Williams is 32 years old and Monday marks her earliest exit at Wimbledon since her tournament debut as a teenager in 1997.
