Machinist's Mate 1st Class Adam R. Hernandez, 28, had been in the U.S. Navy for eight years and wanted to make a career out of it. He was "fearless and full of life, eager to go skydiving, scuba diving, or kayak shark fishing in Hawaii where he was stationed," said Ruth Rivas, his mom.

But in June 2012, Hernandez took his own life.

"Instead of attending my son's re-enlistment ceremony, I had to lay my son to rest," Rivas said. "I truly believe that spice took over my sons mind and caused him to take his life."
